Ciphers · TrithemiusTrithemius Cipher +0 +1 +2
The Trithemius cipher works like the Caesar cipher, but the shift grows with every letter: the first stays, the second moves by 1, the third by 2. Encrypt or decrypt English or Russian text, starting the shift at 0 or at 1. The tabula recta shows every step.

How it works
Shift by letter number
h+0 e+1 l+2 l+3 o+4 → hfnosThe first letter stays, the second shifts by one, the third by two. Signs and spaces do not advance the count.
Every Caesar at once
a a a → a b cCaesar uses one shift for the whole text; here every letter has its own. Repeated letters encrypt differently, so letter frequencies no longer give the text away.
Decoding
hfnos → helloShift back: the first letter by 0, the second by 1 and so on. There is no key — anyone who knows the rule reads it at once.
