A1Z26 replaces each letter with its number in the alphabet: A = 1, B = 2 … Z = 26. Turn a word into numbers or numbers back into a word, pick the separator and the alphabet, English or Russian. A number that is not in the alphabet is highlighted rather than silently dropped.
Everything runs in your browser — the text goes nowhere
Each letter becomes its place in the alphabet. In Russian, numbers after е differ by one with and without Ё.
Words and signs
3 9 16 8 5 18 / 1 2
Numbers in a word use the separator you pick, words are split by a slash. Punctuation is left out.
From zero
a = 0 · z = 25
Computer science tasks often count letters from zero, which makes adding shifts modulo the length easier.

Frequently asked questions
Type the text on the Encode tab: each letter becomes its number in the alphabet, so cipher turns into 3 9 16 8 5 18. Numbers inside a word are separated by a space, a hyphen or a comma, whichever you choose, and words are separated by a slash. Punctuation and digits are left out, since they have no place in the alphabet.
Switch to Decode and paste the numbers with any separators: spaces, commas or hyphens. A slash or two spaces in a row mark the end of a word. If a number is larger than the alphabet, such as 27 in English, it shows as a question mark and is listed above the result, so you can check whether the alphabet is the right one.
With Ё the Russian alphabet has 33 letters: Е = 6, Ё = 7, Ж = 8 and Я = 33. Without Ё the letter ё counts as е and every later number is one smaller: Ж = 7, Я = 32. So the same number can mean different letters in different puzzles; check which alphabet was meant and pick it in the switch.
Some tasks, especially in computer science, number the letters from zero: A = 0, B = 1, Z = 25. This makes it easier to add shifts modulo the alphabet length, as in the Caesar cipher. Tick A = 0 and every number drops by one; when decoding, zero becomes a valid number and 26 no longer is.
It is the simplest cipher for children's puzzles, greeting cards and escape rooms: easy to explain and to check without a computer. The letter number is also the base of other ciphers: the Caesar cipher adds a shift to it, the Polybius square turns it into two digits, and the Bacon cipher into five binary signs.
