About barcodes
A barcode is a way of writing a product number so that a scanner can read it. The most common format, EAN-13, holds thirteen digits: the GS1 prefix, the company code, the item code and a final check digit computed from the rest, which catches errors while scanning.

EAN-13 is the retail format used worldwide outside the United States and Canada. EAN-8 is the short version for small packs where the full code does not fit.

Frequently asked
Pick the EAN-13 type and enter twelve digits — the thirteenth, the check digit, is computed for you by the GS1 algorithm and shown separately. The code appears at once, with the digits printed underneath as they are on packaging. Download it as PNG for documents or as SVG for a print shop, where the exact size matters.
Paste the number into the «Check» section — spaces and dashes can stay. The tool recognises the type by length, verifies the check digit and shows what the number is made of: the GS1 prefix, the company and item codes, and the check digit itself. If it does not add up, there is a typo, and the expected digit is named.
Prefixes 460–469 were issued by the Russian GS1 organisation. That is the country where the number was registered, not where the goods were made: a company registers wherever it finds convenient and manufactures anywhere. A Russian prefix on a package does not mean «made in Russia», and the reverse holds too.

Retail goods and marketplaces normally want EAN-13, the main retail format. Internal warehouse article numbers suit Code 128, which encodes letters as well. Cases and transport packaging are marked with ITF-14. Check the marketplace rules for the exact label requirements — they sometimes prescribe the size and the placement too.
Look at the module — the narrowest bar. The nominal module width for EAN-13 is 0.33 mm, and below 0.26 mm the code scans only now and then, because the scanner confuses adjacent bars. The tool shows the width and height in millimetres and warns when the chosen size is too small to be read reliably.
